Total video game spending in the U.S. hit a record high in 2020, the NPD Group reports. The industry raked in $56.9 billion, a 27 percent increase year-over-year.

Annual hardware sales totaled $5.3 billion, the largest figure since 2011 when the industry saw $5.6 billion in sales. The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform in units sold and revenue in 2020. The family of consoles’ sales (which include both the Switch and Switch Lite) were the second highest for an individual platform in one year in U.S. history. The PlayStation 5, which launched in November, was the second best-selling console in dollar sales, though its predecessor, the PlayStation 4, took the No. 2 spot in units sold.

2020 was a strong year for the Call of Duty franchise, as Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, released Nov. 13, was the best-selling game and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, launched in 2019, the second best. This was the 12th consecutive year that Call of Duty was ranked as the best-selling franchise.

Meanwhile, Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons was 2020’s third best-selling title while Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us: Part II was the sixth-best selling title of the year. TLOU 2 was also the top-selling PlayStation exclusive game.

Elsewhere, gaming accessories saw a 21 percent year-over-year increase, bringing in $2.6 billion in revenue. Gamepad spending reached a record high, with Sony’s DualSense Wireless Controller selling the most in dollars and units.Headset spending also reached a new high, with Turtle Beach Ear Force Recon 70 Gaming Headset Black for the Xbox selling the most in dollars and units.

December 2020 also recorded a record-breaking $7.7 billion in total video game sales, a 25 percent year-over-year increase. Video game content accounted for $5.8 billion of that number, hardware sales $1.4 billion and accessories $546 million. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was the best-selling title of December, with CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 the second best. Nintendo, however, was the month’s big winner with half of the top 20 best-selling games over the month published by the Japanese gaming giant.

Total game sales for both December 2020 and the year as a whole reflect total content spends on video games, including full-game, DLC/MTX and subscription consumer spending across console, cloud, mobile, portable, PC and VR platforms.
